Does the Chess Digest business exist anymore? I know Ken Smith passed long ago, but did anyone buy the business and keep it running?
Thanks!
I don’t think so. I don’t think the business survived the Clinton-Bush recession.
Alex Relyea
I believe that the owner of The House of Staunton bought the books from the estate or widow.
Many of the books are still available from The House of Staunton, especially on eBay.
I do not understand how Mr. Relyea could write, and the men with a badge allow to be posted, " I don’t think the business survived the Clinton-Bush recession."
What has come to be known as the “Great Recession,” transpired near the end of the Bush presidency, EIGHT YEARS after Bill Clinton left office!
What, exactly, is Mr. Relyea attempting to say? Does he believe Bill Clinton worked in concert with Dubya Bush in the last decade of the last century to cause the Great Recession? I have read nothing; heard nothing; or seen nothing to indicate Bill Clinton was in anyway responsible for, or had any part in, the Bushwhacking of America. Does Mr. Relyea have information no one else in the United States of America has seen? If so, I demand he produce in NOW!
Considering that Mr. Relyea referred to the timing of Chess Digest’s demise, his post seems to pass AUG muster, which is more than I can say for Mr. Bacon’s.
Since the recession was certainly fueled in significant part by the massive bank failures which were fueled in part by the loose regulations championed by ACORN, it is fair to say both political parties played a role in the recession.
I was referring to the 2000-2001 recession, i.e. the one at the end of the Clinton presidency and the beginning of the Bush presidency.
Alex Relyea
In the recesses of my mind I remember a recession.
That keeps me fine until,…
I become depressed about a depression that occurred.
But then the class was let out for recess and the recession came back to the forefront…
Were you under the impression that there has only been one recession? According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, there have been 22 recessions since 1900.
When one talks about any recession after the Great Recession it is natural to assume the talk is about the LATEST recession, which dwarfed the small downturn which occurred, if it did, in fact, occur. I say this because what has been called the Great Recession during the later days of the Bush administration, should have been called the Great Depression, but that name is taken by the depression that occurred the last time the Republicans controlled both the Senate and the House, while Herbert Hoover sat, and I mean SAT, in the oval office.
If one disputes this I suggest he surf on over to: shadowstats.com/
Now I’ve gotta go call Ken Rogoff. On second thought, maybe not…
Does this post make any sense at all? I would argue on the facts, but that would seem to be beside the point.
Alex Relyea
Well he had to mention Rogoff so his post had something to do with chess.
I assume this is along the lines of ‘Fischer didn’t win the US Championship. Because we all assume you were referring to the LATEST US Championship.’
When you call Ken Rogoff, please ask him if he considers the National Bureau of Economic Research or Shadowstats.com the definitive source of information about US business cycles.
I’ll wait.
I was being facetious when writing, in jest, that I would call the discredited economist Rogoff, just as he was being factitious when he and his co-author, Carmen Reinhart, published their book, “This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly,” in 2011.

I do not know, and have never met, Mr. Rogoff. I cannot call him, and would not if it were possible. It is unfortunate but Ken has lost all credibility with his peer group in his chosen profession. Ken Rogoff, Mr. Bauer, should be the last to ask “…if he considers the National Bureau of Economic Research or Shadowstats.com the definitive source of information about US business cycles.”
Frankly, I do not know who to call unless it’s a group that is the definitive source of EVERYTHING.

An epiphany! There is only one all knowing man to settle this argument…
