This might be a commonly asked question, but I thought I’d ask it here.
In minute 69 of “Game Over: Kasparov vs the Machine” Garry tells a story of an elevator encounter just after he’d lost the match to Deep Blue.
“I was just here, waiting for the elevator. I met, just for a very brief, you know, ride down, so the 7th floor to the ground floor, a very famous Hollywood actor. Very famous! I recognized him. I smiled. He looked at me. He also recognized me. And, he asked a bit sadly, ‘What have you done?’ I said, ‘Look, I lost a match. It happens. But I’m going to take the stupid machine in the next…in the rematch.’ He said, ‘No, you will not.’ I said, ‘What? I’m going to win the rematch!’ He said, 'No, they’ll not let you play anymore.”
My question is: Who was the very famous Hollywood actor? Does anyone know?
I always thought Garry was a little naive here. IBM did not pay Garry to win.
So the mechanisms that the company took to win the match should have been
expected. It was nothing more than an advertising gimick.
