With Sevan’s passing I was asked how many FIDE norms he had generated over the years for players at his events. Apparently there is some way to look up something on the FIDE site but it is limited to the last 5 (last what, I don’t know). Any thoughts?
The FIDE equivalent of US Chess’s MSA is http://ratings.fide.com/. One can look up any player or arbiter there, and the page for an arbiter includes the five most recent events in the arbiter’s history. (Note that “history” is slightly inaccurate, as this page also shows future events registered with FIDE for which the individual has been named as an arbiter.) There is also a link that allows one to see the arbiter’s full history. (For example, here is my page.)
But, as usual, there is a catch. In its less-than-infinite wisdom, FIDE decided last year that access to any history more than three months in the past requires logging in to a “FIDE arena” account. Currently, such an account is free of charge. Given FIDE’s history, however, I would not be surprised if FIDE starts charging in the future.
Finding the norms earned in an event is, to the best of my knowledge, not a straightforward process. Off the top of my head, the easiest way I can think of is to go to the “title applications” section of the FIDE ratings web site. Then, one can select a FIDE meeting (either the annual congress or the quarterly presidential board meeting) and see the title applications submitted for that meeting. Then, you can look at the title norm certificates submitted with the application.
It may just be simpler for the US Chess office to produce such a list, as a copy of the certificate of title norm result has to be submitted to the federation in which the tournament was held even for a foreign player. But I’m not really sure how organized the federation’s records are or how complicated a request that would be.
Just off the top of my head, from my own experience as an arbiter in Sevan’s norm events, I can think of a few players: GM Mackenzie Molner, IM Eric Rosen, IM Tom Bartell, IM Adarsh Jayakumar. And I’m sure that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
(Anecdote: I was the chief arbiter for Sevan’s May, 2013 norm tournament. IM Bartell achieved his final IM norm in that event, after an exciting finish in his last round game. As I was preparing his title norm result certificate, Mr. Bartell was walking around the chess center in a bit of a daze, repeatedly muttering “I’m going to be an IM” to himself.)
Also, don’t forget how many arbiter norms for which Sevan was responsible. I completely owe my IA title to him, as he either allowed me to direct in his own events or arranged for me to direct in other events. And I am sure I am not the only one for whom that was true.
Thanks Ken.
I see what you mean. That is really stupid. Last time I checked they weren’t doing this. I wonder when they started this nonsense. The only thing I can think is that they are trying to drive people to start playing their online games.
In any case their tournament history pages are junk anyway - really badly designed.
Finding out where a player received norms for his/her most recent title is sometimes easier. For example, on this record: ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=1003062
I assume that’s only available for more recent titles, presumably because the data’s now getting added as the titles are awarded. Whether FIDE will backtrack and build the norms database for older titles is another question.
