Are certain floors removed for players if they have been inactive for some time? US Chess
For this player, linked above, he has all three of the special titles (Senior Life Master, Original Life Master and Life Master) and has a rating of above 2500, but his floor is marked as 2100. My understanding is that floors are determined by peak rating-200, floored to the highest multiple of 100 less than or equal to said quantity. With the exception of high performances at certain events, when higher floors are implemented.
If this is indeed how floors work, this player’s floor should be 2300. Was this one of the bugs when transitioning to MUIR, or is this the correct floor for this certain player?
2100 is the highest rating-based floor. Somebody who breaks 2400 would need either a 2200 money floor or OLM. He should ask for an OLM correction. Note that playing a match when you are at or near your floor has the possibility of lowering the floor, but that might not have happened in this case.
There are no 2200 money floors these days. (Whether there was in the past is uncertain.)
The only way to get a 2200 floor these days is as an OLM.
Inactivity by itself is insufficient reason for lowering a floor, a player who requests a lowered floor has to have a long enough record of being at/near their current floor for the request to be granted.
By EB rule, a player at their floor who plays in a rated match can be treated as if that player has made a request for a lowered floor, in practice this has seldom been done.
OLM or LM, either works, if my understanding is correct? And in this particular case, it’s probably a system error that occurred when they moved over to MUIR, right? I don’t think it matters for this specific player because he’s been inactive for four years, I don’t know if he’s coming back and even if he does, he’s probably not going to dip so far as to reach anywhere near 2200. I was mostly curious.
The norms-based ‘life master’ title does not include a 2200 floor. There are over 60 players who have earned the life master norms-based title but have a current regular rating under 2200.
My observation on a older OLMs @ 2200 floor versus a younger once master who became less active (life got in the way) who has a 2000 floor. In many cases where the OLM is always bouncing around from 2200 to 2220 the 2000 floor is probably equal or stronger than the 2200 floor? Of course, my observation is limited to those I know. True across the general pop??
Here’s a breakdown of the over 1200 OLMs in our system as of last October. Active means any OTB regular rated events since 1/1/25. I did not try to exclude lapsed or deceased members.
