I have a very low rated student signed up for a state tournament that has declared a half point bye for a late round ahead of time. I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn’t prevent them from being given a full point if they were the lowest rated and there is an odd number? I didn’t know if tournament directors avoid giving full point bye to those who are already taking a half point bye.
I am just wanting to make sure they are not being counterproductive because I am assume the student is just taking the bye for the half-point.
If I knew the odd player had scheduled a late round bye and the next available player in the score group was pretty close in rating, I’d probably give the full point bye to that other player. But you could also look for a house player to even up the player count in that round.
Thanks! So it is at the tournament directors discretion? I am a coach trying to help my players maximize their team score at the scholastic state tournament. I just don’t want a a student to prevent themself from getting a full point by declaring a half point bye
28L4. Full-point byes after half-point byes.
A full-point bye should not be awarded to a player who has previously taken or committed to a half-point bye unless all others in the score group have already had a bye or a no-show forfeit win. See also 22C, Half-point byes.
I had a player (who was a club or local director) who had a requested first round bye since he was unsure he was going to make it – he arrived about 10 minutes after we started so was stuck taking the bye. He loses his second game, the person who lost his first two game withdraws, and there was a last round requested bye. So he is sitting alone in the lowest score group with his half point bye and I tell him he is getting a BYE for the 3rd round. He told me I was wrong in giving him the bye since he already had a bye (requested) in first round. I told him he was the only player in the lowest score group so there was no choice.
If it was someone with whom I was more friendly, I probably would have joked Well, that is what the software says.
I’m curious. Isn’t your state tournament giving team awards based upon the top xxx scores (typically 4)? Is the team so small that a low rated player who might only get points off of byes likely to be a top 4 scorer? (I’m asking because some kids/parents/coaches don’t always understand how exactly the team awards work).
It is the State All Grade Championship. Top 3 scores in a specific grade section. The student will likely be the 4th score in the section for the team, so it likely won’t matter, but I figured I might as well help everyone maximize their scores just in case.
