George R.R. Martin Was a Tournament Director?

I seem to recall George helping to direct some tournaments at Northwestern, as did Bill Smythe. George knew the Chicago chess community well enough that it inspired a few of the characters in some of his early stories.

George also was the chief (only?) TD at dozens of CCA tournaments in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, and elsewhere, and probably on the TD staff of some of the monster (in their time) CCA scholastic events on the east coast and Midwest.
