Game Of The Week

To get the chess players in the right frame of mind to play top chess, the Colorado Springs Chess Club has added classical music as an overture to the evening’s event.

This week’s game comes from a newcomer to the Colorado Springs Chess Club, Tom Richardson. He started playing again in April after an 11 year break from tournament chess. So far, he has gone 0-8 in USCF-rated games, but he prefers the slower games and getting used to the clock isn’t easy.

However, he does much better in the correspondence games online. His rating is about 500 points higher when he doesn’t have to use the clock.

The only time I have played correspondence chess was an email match with my Dad. I figured it was a different type of skill set that I didn’t have. It seemed liked the correspondence games favored the “researcher.” Someone who could take his time looking up each position to play precise openings would have a huge advantage.

I also thought that once someone had an advantage, they could use a decent computer to finish the game. Therefore, a comeback would be eliminated. You have no clock to save you and blunders are out of the question.

I was wrong. Not everyone uses those aides.

Tom sent me a game where he makes one of the biggest comebacks in chess I have ever witnessed. Here is a position from the game. It is White to move…

This looks like a helpmate to me. 31. exf7? is clearly not the thing to do. What would have been wrong with preparing exf7 with 31. Bf5 ? The heat is still on Black and his position looks purely defensive.

One bad move can ruin 40 good ones! The best move is a Queen sac! Mate in 3 if I remember correctly.

Sure, but you don’t even have to count if you can see Qg7

You are a natural!

I did not see Qg7 and would have played e7, which apparently doesn’t mate as quickly. Have I seen Qg7, I would have counted, and counted again, and then probably still would have played e7.

P.S. No wonder you drew Bobby Fischer

That was before he got good. If I had been really smart, I would have asked for a school book for the summer and would not have concentrated on chess.

I’m missing what there is to count after 31.Qg7+. After 31…Rxf7 32.fxg7+ either the pawn promotes and mates next move or Ne7 is mate.

But it didn’t look much like him!
