BRIDGEPORT – A man was seriously wounded after he was stabbed in the stomach with a plastic snow shovel during a dispute over a chess game.

Ronald Swinton, 46, of Somers Street, is charged with stabbing his neighbor and one-time friend, Robert Spears, 39, of Wood Avenue, with the shovel when he came to his door Tuesday night, police said.

“These guys were fighting over a chess match that took place several weeks ago,” said Detective Keith Bryant, police spokesman. “It’s a bowl of beef stew.”

Swinton contended that Spears owes him money for the game, Bryant said, while Spears claims he won fair and square.

After staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center alerted police about 9:40 p.m. that a man had been brought, via private car to the hospital in critical condition with a stab wound. Officers interviewed him and learned his attacker’s name and address.

Detectives and uniformed officers went to the Somers Street home and banged on the door, but initially Swinton refused to open it, Bryant said. When police threatened to break in, however, he opened up and allegedly said, " `Is this about that guy that I hit with the shovel?’ "

The charges against him weren’t clear Wednesday night as he was still being processed in the Police Department’s booking area.

Although Spears was initially listed in critical condition, the hospital upgraded him later that night to serious condition and indicated that, with surgery, he should recover, Bryant said.

Both Swinton and Spears, who live around the corner from each other, have arrest records, police said.

:open_mouth: Yehp I’ve heard it all now - boy a plastic shovel, wow. I can’t imagine the ER staff after he came in and told the story.

Does the USCF have a rule against bringing a shovel to a chess tournament?

…no copy of the game?

LOL It would help get TD out of predicaments, referred to the USCF TDCC j/k haha

Ah LMAO I doubt they did notate when one individual claims, “is this about that guy that I hit with the shovel?”
LOL

He hadn’t been informed of his Miranda rights. His question about “the guy I hit with the shovel” isn’t admissible in court. Right?

I don’t think that’s right. Spontaneous declaration before one can be Mirandized is admissable, I believe. (Though I’m willing to be proven wrong.) Not to mention that refusing to comply with the order to open up is obstruction, and that may give the police more latitude. And the trump card is: The person was not yet in custody of the police, a requirement before Miranda applies.

Anything else and people could run up to a cop and say, “Hey! I murdered a guy! And you haven’t mirandized me so you can’t use that against me! Haha!!!” :astonished:

Sad story, showing that chess can indeed be taken way too seriously. As can anything else.

And maybe shovels should be allowed at tournaments. But not as weapons, rather to shovel…

Sort of like how a player whose flag is down and whose opponent has an incomplete scoresheet, can call his own flag and thereby prevent the opponent from completing his scoresheet to make a proper claim of win on time.

my flag is down = I’m a criminal.
opponent has incomplete scoresheet = you haven’t read me my rights yet.
you can’t claim win on time = you can’t use what I say now in court against me.

But the chess situation is worse. If I confess before being Mirandized, the cops can still Mirandize me and then if I confess again I’m cooked, right?

I could be wrong but I believe you’re wrong and the lawyer could get you off the hook cause you weren’t mirandized, it’d be inadmissible or fought hard by the defense lawyer to be. But I’m sure every polic officer would wish criminals came to them confessing -it’d save a lot of footwork

On a different note there was this news I read of a criminal sending memos -who’d think -boy puts a new leverage to the term criminal enterprise

Posting the memo should their website delete the article:
As of December 1st 2009 I don’t want to see anymore *%#@ing Dodge Caravans in here, especially the newer ones 2007/7008/2009 they are worthless and I won’t pay even a penny for them. Don’t even bother stealing them because two of my boys have been snagged since Summer because these stupid minivans broken down while they were driving them over here.

Other SUV’s and minivans continue to sell very well and I would like to see more Odyssey’s and Sienna’s because they sell the quickest and they are dying for more of these overseas.

Don’t waste my time with crappy old cars, none of the little environmental “green” pieces of ^$#& either and if you (%#$ me off you won’t be getting bail money if you get pinched, I will let you rot the ^%#$ in jail.

I will also repeat, don’t ever come here first…stop at one of the safe garages for at least 2 hours before coming here because if any of you bring the cops here I will make sure Johnny pays you a visit at home.
