Is there an app or program like this?

To help me memorize opening lines–I’d like to be able to enter my opening tree, and then have the computer play randomly through the main lines until the end of the book, and correct me if I play wrong. For example, if my repertoire for black is the Najdorf Sicilian, I’d like to have the computer know that my preferred moves for black on move 6 are:

  1. Bc4 e5
  2. Bg5 e6
  3. Be2 e5

And when the computer gets to move 6 in a playthrough, randomly choose between those 3 moves and prompt me for my move.

A program that does exactly what you describe is the Chess Openings Wizard. Mike Leahy is the author and seller. The program used to be called Bookup.

He has a free version available.

I don’t know about apps, but it’s just a sign of how incomprehensible the Sicilian is, that you could prefer to 6. Bg5, e6, but if the opponent plays 6. Bc4 which aims at f7, you prefer not to block it (which e6 would do nicely) and play … e5.

I guess because in the Sicilian, unlike every other opening, that Bishop is actually aimed at e6.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with your choices, just that the Sicilian defies logic.

I was always hoping Bookup would become the standard, but instead Chessbase did. Like Betamax vs. VHS.

As I understand it, Bookup stores games as sequences of positions, but Chessbase stores them as sequences of moves. This means that Bookup will automatically “spot” transpositions, but Chessbase won’t.

No, this is an oops–Be3 and Be2 get met with e5, Bc4 and Bg5 are met with e6. Hence my need of Bookup! (Last night’s ugly struggling middlegame against a Grand Prix attack was similarly inspiring). Thanks, Ron
