If you want to defeat the phpBB auto-censor, just skrew up the spelling, or use h-y-p-h-e-n-s. (Conceivably, though, you might then get into a tangle with USCF’s human moderators.)
The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was originally built as a memorial to the sacrifices of the Russian people in defeating Napoleon. Pre-world War I, many visitors to Moscow made a pilgrimage to the Cathedral to honor the Russian war dead. Russian military dead in repulsing Napoleon are estimated at 200,000+. Civilian casualties were also high but are problematic to estimate but I would think that a guess of 75,000 civilians (+/- 25,000) would not be out of line. Many civilians fought as irregulars against Napoleon and the French conducted savage reprisals against Russian villages. A very high percentage of these dead would be Orthodox Christians. It is also worth noting that under Tsarism there was also a memorial to Muslim soldiers who fought against Napoleon.
The atheist Bolsheviks tore down the original building to build what would essentially be a memorial to Lenin but lacked the funds to complete the project which instead became the site of the world’s largest swimming pool. Orthodox Christians were systematically persecuted by the Bolsheviks and died by the millions between the Civil War, Collectivization, the Great Terror, and the criminal conduct of the Second World War by the Bolshevik leadership.
With the fall of the Soviets, the Cathedral was rebuilt and reconsecrated in August of 2000. Many Russians, including a not insignificant number of Western-oriented Liberals, perceive the Cathedral as a memorial to the victims of Stalin. In 1991, democratic civic elements joined with other groups in a march from the Lubyanka (former KGB headquarters) to the Cathedral site where a prayer service was held for all the victims of Communism.
From a distance the Cathedral is a stunning building! It loses some of it charm closer up. Many people suffered under evil governments in the XX Century; it wouldn’t hurt to show some respect to all of The Dead. Punk Rockers (if indeed the girls are actually a band) can make their points elsewhere.
Maybe I misunderstood but I’ve been told by the moderators that unless the reason for defeating the auto-censor was that it was a “big no-no” unless it was clearly a case of a “silly filter”. I’m guessing the band name was chosen specifically for the meaning for which the filtered word was being filtered. Hence, defeating the auto-filter in this case is not something that the moderators would allow.
I have to say I was mildly surprised that we would filter the name for a kitty and not an actual term for the same body part.
This does present a bit of a dilemma. I agree with Kevin on this. The problem with the name for a kitty is that it also is a slang and vulgar term used for that body part. Then and again that term is used publicly as in the name of this band. I recall it also was used in that shagadelic movie with Mike Meyers.
In this case, I would have allowed the circumventing of the filters used in writing the name of the band. But now that it is discussed, I see no reason for anyone to type it out in a way to bypass the filters. What’s done is done.
Now, back to our scheduled broadcast. Let’s get on topic regarding Kasparov and his arrest.
The prisoners’ closing statements are a remarkable document. (Obviously a couple removes from chess itself, but understanding their motives sheds light on Kasparov’s motives…)
