L0 in crosstable treated as a played game

I’ve just submitted my first tournament online. It was a lot of work collecting memberships, addresses, birthdates etc. from all the players, but I’m happy to see that the tournament was rated so quickly. Great job, Mike!

I did see one problem, which was triggered by an apparent bug in SwissSys version 6. This was a fixed roster team tournament with four players per team. Some teams had alternates who sat out the rounds when they were not playing. SwissSys reported these results as L 0. I changed this to U 0 in some sections where I noticed this, but I didn’t think it was important so I didn’t make this change in all sections.

When I looked at the crosstable on the MSA site I saw that for a provisionally rated player with one or more L0 results, the L0 games were counted as played games. For example, in the Grades 6-9 section player 13’s results were: L 0, L 0, W 13, L 3 and his rating went from 100P3 to 200P7. His new rating should have been 200P5 since he only played two games. In the Grades K-3 section, on the other hand, which I fixed up manually, player 17 was unrated and had results of L 1, U 0, W 55, W 25 and his new rating was correct: 829P3.

This is really a bug in the rating program, but the online tournament entry system could work around it by changing the L 0 results to U 0 automatically. Until the problem is fixed I’ll change L 0 to U 0 manually in all the tournaments that I submit.

The tournament was the Hurvitz Cup (Mass. Scholastic Team), which is the most recently rated tournament for the Massachusetts Chess Association, T5000181.

I thought any game with ‘0’ as an opponent was being treated as unplayed, but I’ll check on that when I get a chance, probably not until Monday.

OK, that problem should be fixed.
