Negatives: The animated chess pieces are useless and there’s a lot of white space. I like compactness. (Which is good in many places). Portal link in the upper right was not obvious. I submitted that players’ year-year winning percentages should be calculated as (w+0.5*d)/(w+d+l) not w/w+d+l. 1W, 1D, 1L should be 50% not 33%.
Positives: Everything including the portal login was fast. (Maybe the overall light load contributed here). Cross table design is good. Cross links worked. Event submission took me a moment to understand, then it’s easy.
Questions: Should I expect email from a validation report? Where is the ratings estimator?
There are no date restrictions for the beta test, but since the membership and tournament database currently used by the beta system only goes through August 5th, it will not display any previously rated events after that nor will it have any memberships processed after that. That may affect validation of the event, it won’t affect your ability to upload them.
Will the uploaded tournament data to the Leago sandbox be deleted at some point after the Beta Test is over? And is there a link to a 15 minute video in this message feed somewhere?
The beta system does not currently send out emails for a validation report. The live system will probably not do that at first, either. It probably won’t send out emails to players when an event is initially rated, either, and probably not notifications of milestones and norms, either. (The beta system probably doesn’t have a functional mail server yet.)
There are going to be a number of features we’re all used to that won’t be present at first. Some may not be missed by most people and thus probably won’t be a high priority to add.
Leago isn’t intended as a plug-compatible replacement for TD/A and MSA, it has a similar underlying structure because it still has to deal with tournaments, sections, players, pairings, results and ratings, and it should compute ratings using the same formula, but where things are and how they look has changed.
What Leago does give us is an updated infrastruture which should make it easier to add new features, like an API for accessing member data or for uploading tournaments. I would expect tighter integration with the membership system and (eventually/hopefully) with the TLA system.
I watched the video on how to do this. Do you really have to estimate the rating change of each opponent that you played in the event, e.g. try to figure out their post-event rating rather than use their pre-event rating, to calculate your estimated rating change? If so, good luck trying to use this in the middle of a tournament.
Thank the world that it’s an “estimator” and comes with a lot of “this may not be your actual rating change” disclaimers!
I’ve discovered a previously event (SuperNationals VII) where the pre- and post-event ratings aren’t showing, I’ve reported this to Leago. There are probably others.
Sure, in fact we highly encourage it! When you click on ‘new event’ click on ‘start blank’ to create an empty tournament template. (We’ve always allowed this on TD/A, too.)
The beta test is intended as a ‘sandbox’, you can try out anything you want. I’ve suggested that we might want to leave a sandbox system in place once we go live, so (newer) TDs, for example, could experiment with uploading and entering events in the sandbox with no fear of it accidentally impacting anyone’s actual rating or tournament history.
BTW, about 17% of the events we rated in the last two years were entered online as opposed to uploaded using the 3 DBF files. (Yes, that surprised me as well.) These were, for the most part, smaller events, but I think there’s at least one 100-player event that was entered online.
I think this is an authentication timeout issue on the TD portal, try exiting the portal and coming back in again. (I think I had to exit/relaunch my browser and enter the beta-ratings.uschess.org URL once.)
If this is a timeout issue based on a short expiration date for the authentication token, that’s something that should be easily changed by Leago. (I have already reported this.)
