Magazine? We don't need no stinkin' magazine!

There seems to be some debate concerning whether or not to have a printed copy of CHESS LIFE. I have read the issue online, since it is July 11 and the magazine has YET TO ARRIVE!
I rest my case.

There’s a whiff of the lynch mob or the lemming migration about any overlarge concentration of like-thinking individuals, no matter how virtuous their cause. -P. J. O’Rourke

Before resting your case, you may want to contact the USCF office to make sure they have the correct mailing address for you. I see several different addresses for you over the years in our records. Did you get the supplemental ballot mailing a few weeks ago? It went to the same address that your Chess Life is going to.

Yes sir, I received it and sent Mr Lucas a thank you email! As far as my address goes, we usually receive many copies of CHESS LIFE here at the HOUSE OF PAIN, none of which have arrived as yet, thank you very much.

I got mine today, Mike. It is pretty typical for me to get mine this much later than some other parts of the country. It varies by post office, for that matter.

It ain’t always USCF’s fault…

There are many more who will miss that “stinkin” magazine, than will not, I fear. Time will answer this question also.

I’m glad you recieved your “hard copy” Mulfish. I wish I could report the same. Unfortunately they did not arrive today; which means the earliest they will arrive can be Monday, the 14th, with almost half the month gone…
Harry, I don’t want you to take me wrong; the magazine don’t “stink.” I used the term in the same way a Zen Master uses a bamboo cane to “whack” a student to focus his attention. It emanates from an old song by the WHO, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2, which goes: We don’t need no education/
We dont need no thought control/…
Then, Neil Young, from his disc, LIVING WITH WAR, wrote this song:

AFTER THE GARDEN
Won’t need no shadow man
Runnin’ the government
Won’t need no stinkin’ WAR
Won’t need no haircut
Won’t need no shoe shine

After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

What will people do?
After the garden is gone
What will people say?
After the garden

Won’t need no strong man
Walkin’ through the night
To live a weak man’s day
Wont need no sunshine
Won’t need no purple haze

After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

Where will people go?

After the garden is gone
What will people know?

After the garden

After the garden is gone
After the garden is gone

[we live in the garden of eden, yeah
don’t know why we wanna tear the whole thing to the ground
we live in the garden of eden, yeah
don’t know why we wanna tear the whole thing down

And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden]

For over 20 years I purchased the Tuesday NYTimes because it had both the chess column and the Science Times. After the chess column was elimanated on Tue, I still bought the paper because of the Science section. Now, the NYTimes sends me a link on Monday to the Science section, so I read it online and it does not cost me anything. I am, therefore, not surprised when I read that newspapers are having a hard time, with readership down, and laying off employees.
I love CHESS LIFE, and have for almost four decades! I’ve looked forward to receiving it in my mailbox no matter how late…Now, I look forward to the day it’s posted online. Times change; so must we. The question is: Can the USCF continue to afford the expense of putting out a magazine? I’m told that our state organization, Georgia, loses money on publishing the award winning GEORGIA CHESS. Other states have taken to publishing the “magazine” online only. We are in a transition period, whereby the new form of communication is online, leaving the old methods behind, like it or not.
An old, brittle tree will be broken by a strong wind; not so for a young supple tree, which will bend, but not break. A liberal is willing to change with the times; a conservative wants things to remain the same. Things do not EVER stay the same. What the conservative wants is not possible. Is that not delusional?Everything changes, that is the nature of things. We must adapt, or die.
As for the content, whether it comes on pages made outta former trees, or online, I do not want anyone reading this to misconstrue my meaning when it comes to CHESS LIFE. It has brought me enjoyment for all of my adult life. I think Daniel Lucas is doing a fine job with the magazine. Although we have had our disagreements, I admire and respect the work he has done with CHESS LIFE and what he did with the moribund phamplet we used to call a magazine in the great state of Georgia. For what it’s worth, I feel, strongly, that Daniel should be on the page of notables on the GCA website. I would advocate it, but, when I suggested that Thad Rogers should be on the page of notables, I received an email from the President of the organization saying: “The criterion we are using is that a person’s major contribution to chess in our state is/was through his/her achievements in the play of the game.”
I received many emails from people in the chess community who thought other wise. An example would be the one I received from Wilder Wadford, which consisted of only three words: “Without a doubt.”
That sums up about as succinctly as possible the way I feel about the contributions Daniel Lucas made to our chess community. Unfortunately, to those who matter, it does not mean a thing…

Another Brick in The Wall Pt. 2 is by Pink Floyd, though I would pay some money to hear a Who cover!

(On topic, I received my Chess Life a few weeks ago (Chicago) I believe)

Oh my GOD, Andy! It must be early “old timers!” As Dierks Bentley would say: What Was I Thinking?

Well, Becky was a beauty from south Alabama.
Her Daddy had a heart like a nine pound hammer.
Think he even did a little time in the slammer.
What was I thinkin’?

She snuck out one night an’ met me by the front gate,
Her Daddy came out a-wavin’ that 12-guage
We tore out the drive, he peppered my tailgate.
What was I thinkin’?

Oh, I knew there’d be hell to pay.
But that crossed my mind a little too late.

‘Cause I was thinkin’ ‘bout a little white tank top,
Sittin’ right there in the middle by me.
An’ I was thinkin’ ‘bout a long kiss,
Man, just gotta get goin’, where the night might lead.
I know what I was feelin’,
But what was I thinkin’?
What was I thinkin’?

By the County line, the cops were nippin’ on our heels,
Pulled off the road an’ kicked it in four-wheel.
Shut off the lights an’ tore through a cornfield.
What was I thinkin’?

At the other side, she was hollerin’: “Faster.”
Took a dirt road, had the radio blastin’.
Hit the honky-tonk for a little close dancin’.

When a mountain of a man with a “Born To Kill” tattoo,
Tried to cut in, I knocked out his front tooth.
We ran outside, hood slidin’ like Bo Duke.
What was I thinkin’?

I finally got her home at a half past two, later.
Daddy’s in a long chair sittin’ on the driveway,
Put it in park as he started my way.
What was I thinkin’?
Oh, what was I thinkin’?
Oh, what was I thinkin’?

Then she gave a “Come an’ get me grin.”
An’ like a bullet, we were gone again.

‘Cause I was thinkin’ ‘bout a little white tank top,
Sittin’ right there in the middle by me.
An’ I was thinkin’ ‘bout a long kiss,
Man, just gotta get goin’ where the night might lead.
I know what I was feelin’,
But what was I thinkin’?
What was I thinkin’?

I know what I was feelin’, but what was I thinkin’?
