Test. Testing to see if replies to the new forum work.
It worked, but the ātestingā content tripped the built-in anti-spam filter, so I had to set it to non-spam.
Hopefully we wonāt see a lot of similar messages as people get accustomed to the new interface and features.
Thanks, Mike. (Or whoever dons the cape today.) I had to create a new username and password to access the new forums. Is that normal and by design?
Our records show there was an āericmarkā account created during the data migration, but with a different email address.
As the welcome message notes, resetting oneās password is done by email, so if the email address on file isnāt the one youāre currently using, that complicates the process of resetting the password.
Iām hoping to step down from the forum staff once weāve gotten past the initial surge from opening up the new forums.

I did not create any account prior to today. When I got to the new forum page, I tried to login using my old username and password. That did not work. I then tried my dashboard login and password. That also did not work. So I created a new login and password. That worked.
Hopefully this will not be a widespread problem, but I wonder if accounts using old login and password info were auto-generated during the data migration, but for some reason are not accessible to returning users when they try to log in to the new forum site for the first time.
There were over 60,000 login accounts on the old system, but that probably includes a lot of duplicates and bogus logins. Also, at one point we were actively encouraging non-members to create Joomla/Forum user logins, with the idea of having a tier of services available to registered users and another tier of services available only to current members, both tiers not being available to those just casually browsing the site without logging in. That concept sort of died off.
So, anyone who posted to the old Forums (around 2000 people) also got a login on new system, but the email address associated with that login could be out of date.
Weāve also had some reports of significant delays in receiving password reset messages. (I know one service Iām on where the password reset messages ALWAYS get put in spam by gmail.)
OK, hopefully this will work and most folks are smarter than I. The need to reset the password could be made more clear. In hindsight, it looks like the new system rejected my old password but not my old login. Or something like that. Maybe put an announcement about that on the site and send an email blast?
There will undoubtedly be others who donāt know they already have a login, I think Dan Lucas is working on an announcement with images that will hopefully help people gain access without creating too many new accounts, though perhaps the only real drawback of creating a new account is that your old posts wonāt show up under the āmy postsā tab.
Back when I was running tournaments, I had a kid register for a summer event as āunratedā, but my records showed he had played in the same event the previous summer, though his mother INSISTED her son had NEVER EVER played in a US Chess rated event! :sigh:
Iām going to see if I can move the last few messages in this topic to a new thread, theyāre off-topic.

I knew I had a login. I knew I had a password. I knew what both of them were. I posted under that login for 18 years, from 2005 till April 2023. At some point I might have changed the password, but if so it was many years ago. I hope I am wrong but I suspect many longtime forum posters will be confused and create new logins.
Dan has updated his post on the Forums, I think that will make it clearer that EVERYBODY needs to reset their password to gain access to the new Forums.
Over the years Iāve been involved in a lot of system transitions. Theyāre always a pain in some part of your anatomy.
OK, I managed to reactivate my old login and username, with a new password.
This is the problem, and I fear it will confuse people who try to login with their old credentials: When you follow instructions and go to Log In at http://forum.uschess.org/
ā¦it just asks you to enter username and password. There is no message or instruction at that pageāto which we are instructed to goāthat says āYour old login is OK but your old password will not work. Please select a new one. Here is how to do so.ā All you see is the āforgot passwordā link.
That is what threw me the first few times. Hopefully most people will pick up on the drill faster than I did. We shall see.
Iāve updated the login page to add:
If you had an account on our old Forums, you can access it by requesting a new password, using either your username or your email address. A password reset message will be sent to the email address on file for that username. It may take several minutes to arrive, and be sure to check your junk/spam folders for it.
It looks like forum staff can update a memberās email address in their member profile, that will result in a confirmation message going to the new email address.
One user for whom I changed the email reported that he got the confirmation message, replied, and got a new password message quickly after that, so thatās one way to help deal with stale email addresses or ISPs that delay/junk password change messages.
I got inā¦not sure how. May have created two accounts: one associated with gmail.com (my personal US Chess login) and one associated with billbrock.net (my biz acct)
Congratulations on the migration!
Yes, it looks like you have two accounts, though one of them hasnāt been activated.
That might be a problem when we try to tie Forum accounts to member records, because weāll probably want to ensure that there is a 1-1 relationship between member IDs and forum logins, since the login will be tied to your member dashboard. (The other account could continue to exist, but you probably wouldnāt have access to it.)
But weāll deal with that when the time comes. For now, welcome aboard!
This project has been a mix of frantic activity and dead stops, kind of like driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway, but without having to dodge bullets literally.
I reset my password OK, and I think this is how to make an entry, but now
how do I log out?
Or do I just close the window with an open session?
Disregard, I found it,
click profile picture upper right then click profile icon lower right o the option box and an option for sign out is there.
I tend to just close the window, that way I donāt have to log on the next time, but Iām the only one using this computer.
A user on Yahoo requested a new password, it took over 2 hours for it to be delivered, Yahoo must have been blocking the email server, something they do at the drop of a hat.
