Please write a letter of protest to girlfriend

My girlfriend bought me the new Kasparov book for my birthday, the one about the 1984-1985 matches. She refuses to give it to me till my birthday, which sadly, is late December. She diabolically hid it in her apartment, and I haven’t been able to find it.
I call on all USCF members to write a letter of protest to my girl, asking her to release the book early to me.
I’m considering taking this up with the USCF board. Perhaps the all-important issue should be taken up, instead of that other nonsense that I hear of.

Patience is a virtue, both in chess and in relationships.

She’s doing you a favor. Maybe by December she will return it and buy you a real present. You can find all of the games in other sources. There is very little added that wasn’t already published elsewhere. One of the more interesting books was by Averbakh on the 1985 match by Raduga Publishers. It has short interviews, pictures, plus critical analysis. Averbakh zaps Karpov’s preparation and play in the introduction.

Let’s review…

A) You play chess AND have a girlfriend
B) Your girl at least recognizes the word “Kasparov”
C) She bought you a chess book (which is an encouragement to continue the Royal Obsession)

Sounds like she’s a keeper. Wait it out then exchange the book :smiling_imp:

Aw, come on. Keep the book, as a lasting memento to the greatest woman a chess player could ever have.

I happen to still own Kasparov’s own book on the '85 match. I hope there’s additional insight here.

I see that some people have criticized my upcoming birthday present… I really enjoyed his Great Predecessors series (what I have read of it, portions of vol 1,2,3), so I figure I’ll enjoy this one too. I think he’s a great writer. His writing is better than his personality!

My wife got me the new book for my birthday. I think it’s quite good. It helps that I’m very interested in the Queen’s Gambit Declined, since there’s a huge number of examples.

I’ve only read the first Great Predecessors volume, and I like the new book better.

It’ll be difficult to outdo my wife who suggested, on the HONEYMOON in Hawaii (during the second week, which was in Maui), that you check out clubs and spend an evening playing chess (which did give her a chance to go through all the photographs taken for her scrapbooks). The club had some nice players as well.

I don’t have a wife or girlfriend :frowning:

My gosh, that outdoes me. If I suggest chess on a honeymoon, well, let’s put it this way, I doubt if I’ll be delivering mate…

My wife (at the time) went to not one but TWO of the Kasparov-Kramnik WC matches in London with me. She thought it was really interesting and even tried playing in a chess tournament with me (in a different section) shortly after. I seem to remember she scored 2/5, quite impressive for her first tournament I thought! She didn’t pursue her promising chess career though.
