The sixth in a series of USCF-rated tournaments at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, Vermont, will take place on Friday, May 23, 2008. 4-round swiss at G/30.
There is no entry fee. Players must be at least 18. Registration must be by phone to Bill Storz at 802-334-8955. It is suggested calls be made at 5:00 p.m.
The typical tournament there has 15-20 players with ratings up to Class B.
Six players from outside joined sixteen inmates for a day of hard-fought chess at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, Vermont, on May 23, 2008.
The result was a three-way tie for first, at 3.5 - 0.5, involving Doug Grant (2245) from New Hampshire, Neil Sullivan (2124) of Montreal, and yours truly (1507) who snuck up on the outside while the big guys were drawing each other in the final round. The tiebreaks for Grant and Sullivan being the same, first place was decided by a blitz game - won by Sullivan.
Kirtlen Bacon, playing his first rated tournament, scored an impressive 3 - 1, tieing for fourth with TD Bill Storz.
