What range of fees do coaches charge for private lessons for kids? Not titled players, just coaches (below Expert) who are substantially stronger than the kids they are coaching?
I’m not sure someone below expert strength is going to be the best choice for a coach. I was a 1600 player at my peak, no way I’d try to teach kids strategy, my rating proves I don’t know much strategy. I was a tactician, at best. (John MacArthur once called me the most dangerous C player in Nebraska, because I had him busted several times, though I eventually lost all of those games due to my inability to convert a won position into a win.)
Teaching the moves is a separate matter. My wife, who has never played a rated game, could do that.
But explaining the WHY behind strategic/positional chess means you have to understand the WHY and then communicate it on a level that the student understands.
Not all good players have that ability to communicate with students.
I charge $10/hr for beginners, $14 for intermediate, and $16 for advanced players.
Someone who is trying to make a living as a chess teacher is probably going to have to charge $30 or more an hour just to make ends meet.
I doubt many chess teachers can line up 40 hours of students a week, and for each hour spent with a student there’s likely to be some prep time.
In my location in remote west Texas, there are few strong players. Either a Class A or B player is the best a parent can find if they want live (not online) lessons for their child.
Thanks for the advice!
Many parts of the country don’t have a lot of active strong players in them. In last fall’s Nebraska Closed, the highest rated player was low 1900’s.
