Quick help by the office

I misspelled a new user’s name when creating their account so I emailed membership@uschess.org. Korey fixed it and replied 6 minutes later.

Curious how you were able to get a reply. I’ve sent multiple emails to membership@uschess.org. I had a single answer asking for clarifying information (fair), but was ghosted after that.

That’s an impossible question for me to answer. I sent email. I got a reply. I’ve needed office help a handful of times for issues of similar complexity. The response times varied from 6 minutes to a day or two. The only real delays came when the voice mail box is full.

EDIT - From memory I don’t think my questions ever lined up with when the office was closed, or the staff was supporting a national event that was underway.

When you send requests to the office make sure the subject line is straigntforward.

In scholastic tournaments when parents see an incorrect result (and after I verify with the opponent to determine it was reported incorrectly on the pairing sheet and not pointed out during the tournament) then my subject line says something on the order of: result correction needed in tournament (ID number). If somebody bought a new membership instead of renewing an old one then the subject line includes the two IDs that need to be merged.

Sometimes the office is busy and it takes a day or three to get back to me. Once during a busy period it may have taken them a week to merge two IDs (an only mildly time-sensitive issue after the automatic re-rating programs went into effect).

PS 80,000 members sending one e-mail per year to the membership team averages 40 per working hour. If it is only 1,000 members averaging two e-mails per year then that drops down to one per working hour. Patience is a virtue.
