It seems that a generation in chess is in the process of passing. Korchnoi, Berry, Kopec and others, not including the too young Bill Hall. I hate to think who might be next. Perhaps we should make an offering to appease the chess goddess…
I don’t know that I would compare Kopec generationally to Korchnoi. He didn’t get his IM title until 1985, by which point Korchnoi was already done playing for the world championship. Still, it is a point well taken. What a difficult month, and that doesn’t include Mr. Muradian’s passing earlier this year.

As the “Baby Boomer” generation continues to retire, we will see more of these tragic notes about the passing of our friends and colleagues. On the local scene, a number of my friends have “sailed to the west.” It is just not the same anymore when I go to tournaments.
