Swiss Tournaments

So looking at it a different way, it’s a series of one-round tournaments (thus the payouts) with carry-over pairings from previous one-round tournaments (hyper-accelerated? ).

It’s the plus-score format taken to it’s most basic level, with the twist of persisting pairings. Might as well submit once a month to keep the ratings current.

If you submit each round separately then hopefully the validation software will not think it is a set of one game matches.
It’s more of a variable win-bonus than plus-score, seeing as somebody going 1-3 (in a 10-player event as an example) with a win in a round with mostly draws can get more money than somebody going 3-1 with two draws and two wins in rounds with all decisive games.

It will cost $12 instead of $3 in rating fees to submit each round separately. It may be worth the extra $9 over four months to update the ratings as you go. Players in my events often check for rating changes the morning after the event.

Players lose the ability to obtain bonus points.

The Nassau CC Championship is held over 10 consecutive Mondays and I’ve never had a problem getting it rated and I don’t need to do anything differently from my shorter events. What are the alleged problems?

Match rule limitations (eg, players with established ratings within 400 points of each other) are not enforced for one-round events unless the event is coded as a match by the submitting TD. The USCF reserves the right to rate one round events as matches (eg, enforce the limits on gains and losses from match play.)

If an event is more than 45 days in duration, the validation program will raise an alert, as USCF recommends that events longer than about six weeks be submitted in several parts.

If the starting date was more than 9 months ago or the ending date was more than 6 months ago, then the USCF office will have to review the event and approve the dates before it can be submitted for rating.

In submitting the games on a month basis to the USCF, might prevent a lot of issues. Can the event be started as a Beginning Date and End Date of the event in the last month (start in Sept and End in Sept) just to prevent issues, as long as the players are told of the senerio.

If players are playing their games, they should not lose their bonus points. All games are being played as a 4 rd swiss. Just not in a weekend tournament. As they also have their rating pts for the games.

If each round is submitted separately, or even if the first two rounds are submitted as one event and the last two rounds as a second event, those events would not be eligible for bonus points, because you need at least 3 rounds in a section to qualify for bonus points from that section.

When Tom Martinak submits the Pittsburgh Chess Club’s monthly league games, each round is a separate event.

For example, see msa.uschess.org/XtblMain.php?201204159432 (round eight)
and
msa.uschess.org/XtblMain.php?201203189542 (round seven)

The Pittsburgh Chess League is a completely separate affiliate and is not part of the Pittsburgh Chess Club. The League operates from September to April. Matches are played on one Sunday per month. We have two round robin sections and Swiss System section based on rating.

We used to send in Pgh Chess League games in 4 round batches until rating policy changed to allow us to send the results in each month. It was pretty much the same overall cost to send each round in monthly. This also provided the players and local TDs more up to date ratings for the players. Players, many of whom only play in the League, also wanted to see their rating quicker.

Say the 1st tournament game was in June, would it be acceptable to wait until Sept to submit as a 4 rd swiss as if there were all 4 games played in sept instead of over a 4 month period. Everyone gets the pts and no worries over the long time frame for WinTD program?

The USCF recommendation is that you submit reports roughly once a month.

That recommendation was one made back when most events were usually rated 1-2 weeks after
the event ended, and was based largely on complaints from players in long-running events that they weren’t seeing the impact of the games on their rating promptly.

These days the office starts getting complaints if an event isn’t rated 48 hours after it ended.

If the starting date is more than 9 months in the past, you will need office approval in order to submit it for rating.

People wait that long?

I asked the players about 1 game per month, they had no problems on how long it took. They seemed to like the one day a month due to commitments.
So we went with the one game a month to make a 4rd swiss.

Sometimes a membership check has to clear.

One potential problem to keep in mind with long events is membership expiration.
