In SwissSys, I much prefer to view the players information using “Standings”, which has each players information nicely on one line, rather than the “Wall chart”, which has each players information on two lines. Which do you prefer?
When you open SwissSys, it always opens with the “Wall chart”. I suggested to Thad Suits that a nice new feature would be to make it so you can open SwissSys directly in “Standings”. He said it was a good suggestion so hopefully he will add it soon.
Showing the wall chart version shows color assignments, which is significant information for those trying to anticipate (or TDs verifying) pairings in the next round.
I’d also prefer if the standings showed all rounds rather just up to the last one played/paired. That way it would show upcoming byes. Right now only the wall chart has that.
Bill Smythe, that’s a pretty reasonable compact suggestion.
Using lowercase for colors and uppercase for results helps to distinguish w for white from W for Win.
Placing the colors column between the score column and the round-by-round results helps to separate two numeric, but distinct, data types (score and results), thus improving readability.
For games still in progress one could use a hyphen (or question mark?) instead of W, D, or L. Specifically, one could post the standings just after the pairings are made, so that the standings would include current-round pairings.
I also agree with Bill Buklis that future rounds should be included, so that previously requested half-point byes could be listed.
Can it also post requested byes for future rounds (not just the very next round)?
And does it post the colors all in one column –

score colors rd1 rd2 rd3 rd4 rd5
14 Smythe, Bill 10339022 IL 1800 2.5 wbbwb W20 L5 D13 L8 W16

– or does it do something like the following?

score rd1 rd2 rd3 rd4 rd5
14 Smythe, Bill 10339022 IL 1800 2.5 W20w L5b D13b L8w W16b

I would prefer the former. It’s a little less confusing, and allows sequence considerations (like two blacks in a row) to be seen more immediately.
I suspect a greatly underappreciated feature in SwissSys is the “Byes/Inactive players list” (choose “Byes/Inactive players…” under the “Players” menu. This command brings up a dialog box showing a summary of half-point and zero-point byes for all players in the section as well as withdrawn players (and a button to “Print this list”).
In this dialog, there is also a “Show inactive” button. Clicking this button will show the players who will not be paired for the next round. I find it very useful to check this list before pairing to be sure I didn’t miss any bye requests or withdrawals. (In the “Show inactive” and “Show active” views, the user can click the “Change round” button to select a different round to show.)
Did you ever wonder why the “Byes/Inactive players list” was in such tiny font when you printed it out? Turns out this was a bug which was recently fixed.
That sounds nice, but I still think it would also be nice if Standings (as wall as Wall Charts) had the option of showing requested byes for all future rounds, not just the very next round.
I suppose, for clarity, the printed title on the Standings report could read “Standings after round N”.
