…is off the table for now. Can you imagine US Chess losing Texas to a new federation after all the money and resources that have been poured into the Lone Star State? It would be a tough blow.
I’d be happy to allow them to leave the Union along with any of the states of the Confederacy that care to as well. That said, there is a Vermont secession movement based on the position that in joining the Union, Vermont, in its state Constitution, reserved the right of secession.
I’d love to see Vermont secede and enter into a confederation arrangement with Canada whereby for our taxes we’ll be able to use the Canadian health care system. Plus, out local club already has contacts with the club in Sherbrooke and the Quebec Chess Association.
At some point Texans will come to their senses and realize how much federal money it receives and how many jobs are dependent on being part of the United States of America. In addition, Texas would have to establish an army, air force, and navy to defend itself from Mexico which would be happy to re-annex the territory it lost in 1840. Just think of the oil reserves alone that would be acquired by Pemex. After kicking out the Texicans, Mexico would then be more likely to build a wall to stop immigration. The US would be flooded with refugees.
Just before the War of 1812, the states of New England threatened secession for economic and political reasons if the US got into a war with England. Anti-war sentiment ran high at the time, but subsided quickly after the war began. The loss of Vermont at this time would be an oddity and unlikely to be accepted lightly by the US, though the presently constituted Congress would probably not declare war with Canada over it. It is unclear whether Canada would want Vermont, anyway, given the improving relations between the two countries after recent negotiations between the President and the Canadian Prime Minister. Imagine all the Vermonters who would have to get passports in order to continue to work in Massachusetts.
I doubt that either Texas or Vermont have the needs or desires of its chess players high on its list of priorities. Stubborn rebel chess players would have to be routinely screened for sedition for wanting to remain part of the USCF rather than join the Mexican or Canadian chess federations. Triple weighted sets would not make it through metal detectors and might be considered weapons of mental destruction. The USCF Rulebook, 6th edition, would become a banned book. Players would be forced to play by FIDE rules. Oh, the horrors!
Once Trump is elected POTUS, as I anticipate he will be, the relationship with Canada will sour. Vermonters will be granted political asylum if Vermot stays in the Union. However, look for a certain area of Brooklyn to declare its independence from the US and for Putin to send non-combatant combatants to Little Odessa. Ukraine all over again…
