The Yugoslav Attack

I’ve been struggling with this opening lately. I use the Sicilian Defense and am fairly adept with it, and I use a variation (the Accelerated Dragon) that’s supposed to prevent the Yugoslav attack. However, I recently played a tournament game where my opponent managed to transpose into a Yugoslavish sort of attack with his Bishop on e3 and Queen on d2. I could find no way to stop him from setting up this attack, which I naively believed myself immune to due to my opening choice. So my question is, is there a way for me stop him from attacking?

Also, in the line 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Be2 0-0 8.Qd2 d6 9.0-0-0 Nxd4 10.Bxd4 Be6 11.h4 Qa5 12.Kb1 Rfc8 13.b3, I’ve been finding it very hard as black to form an attack quick enough to slow down White’s. Any ideas on how to break white’s structure?

In this line you give, Black can play 8…d5 instead of 8…d6, with good play. That’s supposed to be the whole idea in the Accelerated Fianchetto, isn’t it? Also, it should be mentioned that after 12 Kb1? Nxe4! wins on the spot (well, at least two pawns and a winning position).

As Hal mentioned you can play 8…d5. When you play 8…d6 it’s going to transpose back into a normal Dragon which is going to allow White to play the Yugoslav.

I suppose that it just seems to me that an attack in the center would not be powerful enough to stop an attack on the wing, assuming that both sides started attacking on the same or almost the same move. Any ideas on how to make an attack in the center stronger than one on the wing?

Oh, and that’s a good point about 12.Kb1, but white could reach a similar or identical setup using a different move-order. Ideas on how to break the pawn structure a2 b3 and c2?

Although no rules in chess are absolute, an attack in the center is often a good way to neutralize a wing attack. Compare this with a main line position of the Yugoslav:

  1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 0-0 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. 0-0-0 d5.

This pawn sacrifice really takes the sting out of any attack by white. Instead, white’s best try for an advantage is by positional means rather than a raw attack. If white wants to avoid this and attack on the kingside, he must first prevent black from striking in the center with 9. Bc4.
