U.S President

Will our next president of the United States of America have any effect on chess ? Thoughts?

No

Chess will be one of the last things on any of the candidates’ minds.

Most of the FIDE countries have some sort of government support. The US does not and never ahs and is unlikely to ever have government support for any sort of sport. If the IOC operates without government support, then chess sure is not going to.

Interestingly FIDE officials seem to think that US Chess does or ought to have some sort of direct ability to make the US government do things like issue visas. How little they understand us.

I second what Allen said.

Also, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We can play an advocacy role with respect to issues that may be decided in the political realm (the tiny percentage of education funding that might be properly allocated to chess, for example). But we are expressly forbidden from inserting ourselves into any political campaign. So why even risk the appearance of doing so?

Further, our members have strong feelings. Not all of us will agree. It’s impossible to avoid the intrusion of external political concerns in any nonprofit (I’ve done this myself in the US Chess Issues Forum). But it’s good practice to keep that intrusion to an absolute minimum. (Preemptive Godwin: I’m a Communist, and some of my best friends are fascists. )

The Good Lord gave us Twitter and Facebook for such things…

Some would blame Satan for Twitter and Face book. Personally, I’ve always said we should merge YouTube, Twitter and Facebook and call it “YouTwitFace”.

Did you say this before or after Conan O’Brian did?

I don’t watch Conan, so I couldn’t say for sure. But it’s definitely not original with me, so most likely the correct answer is “after”.

Oh yes - I saw it on Facebook…

Send Trump a tweet. He’ll comment on just about anything.

Lol. Seriously though, US Chess might want to consider starting it’s own YouTube channel, if we haven’t already. I belong to USA Shooting and the ICCF (the FIDE equivalent) has a terrific YouTube channel that helps build support for national federations.

Which U.S. President impacted this?
