Wall Street Journal story on chess 9/27

The Wall Street Journal is running a story today on chess (or at least it showed up on their website today.)

Chess, as a Survival Skill
School Uses Chess to Teach Self-Control, Critical Thinking to Troubled Students

The story talks about chess in a St. Louis school, Innovative Concept Academy, a school for students in the 6th-12th grade who have been kicked out of other schools in the district. The chess program at that school is funded by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis.

that’s awesome! thanx for the news. i would like to print that article up and show it to all the schools i solicit chess classes to but i can’t find the article online.

Thanks for the link, Bill. I have an online subscription to the WSJ, and I’m never sure which articles they place on their public site (so people can see them for free) and which ones they do not.

Another good recent article was The Motley Fool’s September 8, 2010 article written by Lee Samaha “What Great Chess Players Can Teach Investors”.

Samaha comments on three former world champions and how their style matches up to various investment styles:

  • Tigran Petrosian (his favorite player);
  • Anatoly Karpov;
  • Mikhail Tal.

They have a good weekend crossword puzzle in the Friday newspaper. When we can’t scrounge a copy at Commuter Rail, we end up buying a copy.
