I’m having a Win TD issue. Two emails to support have gone unanswered, which leads me to believe what I’m doing wrong is so obvious they don’t want to bother with me. The problem is that when I try to add a player (team) to a team vs team tournament via the Players - Add a player menu item, the program crashes. Every time. It happens if I’m using the “new” format or the legacy format. I can drag a team from a player list to a section, or drag teams between sections, but I can’t add them via the Add a player dialog box. Things seem to work okay when I’m doing individual tournaments. I’m using v. 5.00e with W10. Any ideas?
Switch to SwissSys .
Can you add that player without dragging? I ask because in an older version I was unable to drag players. Tom Doan fixed it. Perhaps he is working on a fix as we keyboard?
When I had a similar problem in XP with 4.11 (after a lot of players had already been added) I would close it, reopen with 4.03 and add the players. The I could close it and use 4.11 for everything else. 4.20 fixed that issue (and later I no longer used an XP machine)
I’ve been using SwissSys since DOS days, but I do like Win TD for team vs team tournaments.
I can drag to my heart’s content, but can’t add them through the “Add a player” menu item. Apparently just the opposite of your former problem. Let’s hope he can and will fix it, assuming I’m not just doing something wrong. I’ve had very good luck with 4.11 over the years and I think I know what I’m doing.
My first version of Win TD crashed with dismaying regularity, but the backup was always there waiting for me when I started it up again. It never left me high and dry. I can’t remember the last time 4.11 crashed, though. It’s been very stable and I guess I got a little complacent. I didn’t foresee any problems with 5.00. Yes, there are work arounds, but it seems it should work, no?
I recall WinTD crashing on me when I’d make manual pairing changes, or fix color issues (when participants played the wrong color) through drag and drop. This was before v 5.0.
After having emailed support several times, and getting no replies (not even a “go play with yourself” reply), I switched to SwissSys, which I use regularly now for online tournaments.
I was kind of excited to see that WinTD released a new version, but it doesn’t seem to offer anything for online tournaments; at least not to the extent that SwissSys does.
I’ve always been a WinTD fan, as I’ve used it for many years, but even now, it seems, from what Joe wrote, there’s still problems with 5.0.
Last month I tried using WinTD 5.00e for a small scholastic tournament just to try it out. I quickly found a few easily reproducible crashes. I look forward to the new features and file format, but in its current version, I do not think it is ready for general use.
I received word last night that WinTD 5.00f was available, so this morning I installed it and gave it a trial run. It seems to have fixed my primary problem, an inability to add a player through the “Add a player” dialog box, and so far I haven’t found out that it introduced any new problems. For the moment, I’m hopeful.
Can you tell me where I can get this version 5.00f? I have run two tournaments now with WinTD 5.00 and experienced crashes during both events.
I don’t remember what I was doing in the first event when it crashed but during the second one (just last weekend) it crashed twice – and the second time I was doing nothing at all. WinTD was the only application running and it suddenly vanished from the screen, closing spontaneously. The backup file feature worked well and I didn’t lose any data but later there was another issue.
When I went to do the rating report, after creating and uploading the three files for USCF, the validation report showed a huge number of errors. In one section, about half the pairings didn’t have matching numbers. That is, if player #28 was paired with #4, he was correctly shown with #4 as his opponent but #4 would not show #28 but instead some other number, like #26.
I deleted the entire rating report and generated a new set of upload files, after checking that all the data shown within the program was correct – and it was - all the pairings, results, and other information was completely accurate. However, the upload files were corrupted somehow, as I had the same error again. In the end, I had to take the pairing sheets in hand and manually correct all the opponent numbers in the affected section. It was tedious but at least it was possible to get in the report finally.
I would downgrade to version 4 but the license key is linked to a specific computer – and my copy of version 4 is on an old laptop which is being retired. So, if there is a new version of 5, I would like to try it. In the meantime, everyone else: DO NOT upgrade to version 5.00. It was released too soon.

For Windows, there’s a “WinTD Updater” application in the WinTD 5.0 folder on the desktop. It checks for updates and (optionally) installs them. We just posted the “f” build yesterday—so far as we can tell, it fixes all the known issues.

OK, I hadn’t noticed the updater.
I did the update to “f” and then did a test, using the same tournament file from last weekend. First of all, many minor issues I didn’t mention (because I had found simple work-arounds) were fixed. I created new USCF report files and uploaded them. This time, everything was perfect in the validation report. Though I have no quick way of testing for crashes, every previous problem I could check quickly seems to be resolved.
As it happens, I may not be directing again for some months, so I will not soon have the opportunity to do a full tournament-length test. I would be interested to hear reports from others who have used this version “f” update.
