2009 SuperNationals

Where does one go to see all the events ie workshops, simuls , lectures etc? What are costs for these?

Here’s a schedule from the Super Nationals IV webpage. It’s pretty much a skeleton schedule, but at least you’ll know what time something is happening.

Does anyone know how they arrive at “early registration discount” scheduling?

It is a bit of a shame that the deadline was March 5, during the week “before” the Illinios State Championships held this past weekend. Our State Scholastic Association pays “Early Registration Fee” for 4 members of State Championship Teams and our local NFP (Bloomington Normal Area Scholastic Chess) provides an additional $500 for member schools State Championship teams who attend the USCF Nationals.

Its a shame because the State Scholastic Organization is NFP and the Local Scholastic organization is NFP and because the Illinois State Scholastic tournament isn’t held until 1st week of March, the funds these NFP’s are providing are simply going to pay the 50% higher fees to enter.

How many State Championships are being held before the early registration discount?

I think they took the dates of the event and subtracted a month to get the first early registration cutoff date. Hence April 5th became March 5th. (Possibly coincidentally, the cutoff date for the 2008 JHS, which was held April 4th-6th, was also March 5th, so the first of the cutoffs in 2009 is actually a day LATER than it was in 2008, relative to the dates of the event itself.)

They then added two weeks to that to get the 2nd cutoff date, March 19th.

I think the final cutoff is based on when they want to switch over from having registrations done online to having them done on-site at Chess Control.

The Elementary is the largest of the 3 spring nationals when they’re held separately, and in recent years it has been held on Mother’s Day, which make the cutoff dates for it considerably later than for an event being held the first weekend in April.

The necessity for earlier cutoff dates (compared to the cutoff dates for the last of the three events in a non-SuperNationals year) is one of the downsides of SuperNationals, as the three previous SuperNationals have also been in April.

Kentucky’s State Team championship was February 28th. So a week before deadline. The state Individual however, is not until next weekend.

But the KCA doesn’t pay any entry fees for the SuperNationals so it doesn’t really matter that much.

Maybe the ISC should have been arranged for before the early registration cutoff? I’m sure the dates of Supernationals have been known for quite some time.

1st week of March is the long term traditional date for ISC - long predates USCF Super - Nationals. With Super-Nationals not occurring every year and with 1 week of March still a month from any regularly scheduled Nationals, it is the best date for Illinios State Championships.

Mike Nolan has posted a schedule for the simuls.

I saw a draft of the full schedule today, but it still had several ‘to be determined’ holes in it. The simul schedule was finally complete enough so that we could open online registration for them.

Based on the first few hours, the Sunday simul with Women’s World Champion GM Alexandra Kosteniuk may fill up first.

High School Boys! :imp:

…or male TDs gone AWOL.

Also the fact that it’s on Sunday afternoon, so it may be less likely to conflict with a round.

Shhh… I’m setting up my scapegoat. :sunglasses:

I was looking at the updated schedule that Nolan posted today. It had the time limit for the Parents & Friends listed as Game/30. Was that typo or did they reduce the time limit? I believe in Orlando it was G/45. As much as I like the extra 15 minutes there are a few good things about the reduced time with the same schedule as past events. Maybe for once I won’t be in some insane time scramble with 3000 kids coming into the room at that time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Polly,

No typo. We changed that to G/30. The time control and new schedule for the P&F should allow parents and coaches to spend more time with the kids, including lunch and dinner, as well as getting them to the playing areas on time…

I think it’s an excellent change. I always seemed to miss getting back to the kids before they started their next round. Hopefully you will not deduct the 5 minutes for the delay.

Ugh… There is no worse time control in my opinion than G/30. I’ll play G/29 and just play for quick rating and fun, but 30 minutes is casual play to me. I’ll be skipping it. :frowning:

The guy’s got a point. People want a quick game so they can get back to the kids, so why make 'em put their regular rating on the line?

Because almost nobody cares about their quick rating.
