Years ago we came up with the idea of combining chess with roller derby, the teams can only make one move on each trip around the rink. And if they’re blocked from the board, they have to go around again, even if their clock is running.
BTW, if you’ve ever seen the 1975 film “Rollerball”, with James Caan, the actors making that film apparently had so much fun filming the scenes where they were playing rollerball that when filming was done they played a complete game just for fun.
In New Hampshire, Mike Sullivan (now of Oklahoma, if memory serves) ran a chess tournament in conjunction with a small town fair that also boasted a 5K race. He awarded the “Renaissance Man” award to the top overall finisher in the chess tournament and road race. To calculate the winner, he evaluated the percentage of chess players beaten out by the competitor and added it to the percentage of runner beaten out by that same player. The highest total would win the prize.
I suppose there’s a number of ways to do it, but that was fun in a small town setting.
