Do Online Chess Tournaments Count Toward TD Experience?

Do running online chess tournaments with 17 people count toward experience as a Club TD trying to qualify to be a Local TD? A TD must have directed 50 players in 3 tournaments to have the experience to take the Local TD test trying to qualify as a Local TD. Do only OTB tournaments count toward reaching 50 players?

“A total of three Category D tournament experience credits are required, as listed below in a1– a3, with the total number of players for all three tournaments summed together being 50 or greater.”

A Category D tournament is defined as “Any US Chess rated over-the-board Swiss system tournament or section of a tournament, except Category I or N, drawing fewer than 50 entrants and having at least three rounds.”

So yes, they have to be over-the-board tournaments.

However, you will note that experience requirement a3 can be substituted by those options listed in b1 to b4 and b4 says “Satisfactory performance as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament, of at least three rounds can be used as a single one-time substitution for a requirement (a3) Category C tournament.” (I believe that should be Category D, not C.)

So one online Swiss of at least 3 rounds can be used to meet one of the three Category D tournament experience requirements required to upgrade to Local TD.

By the way, one thing to note about the Local TD experience requirements compared to other levels is that they do not have to be regular/dual rated events. Blitz and quick only events can also be used to meet the Local TD experience requirements.

As a side note, please remember you do need an established regular US Chess rating (not provisional or unrated) to move beyond being a Club TD.

What is the exact web address that shows your number of regular games played so far so that you can tell if you have enough regular games played to qualify to advance as a TD?

It’s the main rating site. If you don’t see a “/xx” after the games, that’s an established rating, which requires 25 games.

You, for example, have established regular, online-quick, and online-blitz ratings, no over the board blitz or online regular rating, and a provisional quick rating based on 11 games “/11”.

…you have also played 29 rated regular games.

Where do you see the number 29 for regular games? I would like to see that.

Towards the bottom of the page are some game stats. You can change the drop down to just look at Regular rated games:

Hey I found 10 and 19 games listed for two different years. I was originally looking for the old listing that Legacy had I guess.

Does the Club TD Test have to be taken and passed before seeking to be a Local TD even if the Club TD Test is taken early?

The Club TD test does not have to be taken and passed to become a Local TD as long as the Local TD requirements are met before the end of the first Club 3-year term (see Section 23 of the TD Certification rules).

The Local TD test also doesn’t have to be taken and passed to become a Local TD if a Club TD renewal test is passed at the 80% level by a Club TD with the Local TD experience requirements (See Section 27; you’re just automatically upgraded).
