Local TD Requrements When Already A Local TD

When one is already a local TD, it seems that there is not a minimum amount of chess players the local TD has to field in his or her tournaments to keep from losing local TD certification. Is that assumption accurate? In other words once a club TD becomes a local TD, he or she does not need to keep on playing 50 tournament chess players to meet a requirement. Does the local TD have to run 4 tournaments with any total amount of players, not as much as nor higher than 50 players to keep his or her local level TD status. Or does the local TD have to run only 4 Category D tournaments regardless of how few players total there are from all tournaments?

The Tournament Director Certification Rules are fairly straightforward on this point and available at https://new.uschess.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/tournament-director-certification-2026-v2-pdf.pdf

  1. Expiration.
Four-year renewable term: The testing requirement for re-certification is waived for a local TD with satisfactory performance as a TD of four different tournaments during the four-year term.

As you note, they only require “satisfactory performance as a TD of four different tournaments during the four-year term.”

If you look at Club, Senior, and ANTD expiration terms, you will see that they are very similar (other than the Club director being required to take a test at the end of the first term and only being able to waive out of subsequent tests).
