Has Anyone heard...

that Bryan Smith made his last GM norm?

All the best, Joe

Was this in Michigan? I know he scored 6/9…with the field they had, that should have been enough for him, though I didn’t do any calculations. I hope he finally got there.

Not certain…he is talking about it on Facebook.

Great tournament for Smith. Was the event subject to FIDE’s twenty foreign player requirement for Swiss System international norms? (An Illinois player recently lost two IM norms to this rule.)

According to the FIDE rating report, there were 23 foreign players in the tournament, but not all of them played all nine rounds (probably, there was one unrated player who wouldn’t show up in the “number of rounds”), however Mr. Smith played 5 foreign players himself.

The tournament report for this event is up on CLO. It states, among other things, that Smith earned his final GM norm.

Not to put a hex on this, but there have been occasions in the past where someone earned what was thought to be their final GM norm and FIDE disallowed it.

True enough. Those occasions, AFAIK, are related to cases where pairings were changed to enhance norm opportunities. With the field that tournament had, I would think such manipulation wasn’t necessary.
