Live Long and Prosper, Spock

Leonard Nimoy has passed away. nytimes.com/2015/02/27/arts/ … at-83.html

For me, this is deeply related to chess. When I was 10 I watched Spock play chess on Star Trek, and asked for a chess set for my 11th birthday. I played with my brothers and a high school neighbor down the street before starting a junior high chess club two years later, and then eventually playing in high school. For my 12th birthday I saw HAL play chess and beat Frank Poole in 2001: A Space Odyssey. (See youtube.com/watch?v=MzIQUDQO-ag)

Those years were difficult for me; I lost my oldest brother in an accident. A close-by trusted adult committed a heinous murder and I testified in that trial.

Chess, and Spock, became two close friends – two friends that I’ve kept for years. “I have been and always shall be your friend.”

His final tweet: “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP” (Live Long And Prosper)

Live long and prosper, Leonard.

Today has been a very difficult day for me. I was terribly saddened by the news. Mr. Spock has always been my most favorite fictional character of all time. I grew up watching him. I can remember running around playing with my brothers, and giving them “Vulcan neck pinches” as they then pretended to pass out.

I’m a die-hard Star Trek fan. Always have been. Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock was amazing.

“I have been and always will be your friend.”
“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few… or the one.”
“Live long and prosper.”

Rest in peace, Leonard. You WILL be missed.
