Mobile feedback on the new uschess.org homepage

Hi all,

Just wanted to share a couple of small mobile experiences I’ve noticed with the new homepage — hopefully this is helpful as the team continues polishing things!

  • When I tap the player search box on my phone, type a name, and hit “Search,” the keyboard stays up and covers the results. I have to tap outside to dismiss it every time before I can see the player info. It works, but it’s an extra little step each lookup.

  • The beautiful 3D king/queen animation is really eye-catching! On mobile, a very light swipe sometimes spins the pieces instead of scrolling the page, so I occasionally have to swipe a second time to get past it.

Nothing major — the new design overall looks fantastic — just a couple of tiny mobile quirks that caught my attention. I’m sure a quick tweak or two would make the experience even smoother on phones.

Thanks so much to everyone working on the site update — it’s greatly appreciated!

To be honest, it’s not really all that mobile-friendly. It works–sort of.

The plan is to introduce an app that will be better designed for small-screen devices.

The flaw with responsive web site design is that it applies rather mechanical rules to squeezing the information on the space available. What works better, IMHO, is redesigning the way the information is displayed to match the space available. This changes the ground rules for things like optimal usage of space.

It also takes into account the fact that most computers are in landscape mode and most mobile devices are in portrait mode.

As long as not draining US Chess budget. You will be surprise how tedious “converting” website app that was design for desktop to mobile phone with 100% features converted (viewable). Most TD will use desktop specially for big tournaments. Or “Go Fund Me” for converting the app to mobile app, and then ask TDs who want that to pay upfront to fund. And if enough fund from that for developers to work on it, the go for it.

I know several app developers, writing apps is a task I would not be good at, because I’m a dinosaur when it comes to graphic design.
