Robert Smeltzer has passed away

The USCF has received notice that Robert Smeltzer has passed away. Mr. Smeltzer was for several years the most active tournament player in the country, and was featured as such in an article and on the cover of Chess Life in June of 1996. He was a long time member of the Dallas Chess Club.

FWIW, Mr. Smeltzer was the 2nd most active player in the USCF in 2009, with 561 regular rated games. Jay Bonin was #3 in 2009, with 533 regular rated games. #1 was Mac Williams (also of TX) with 566 regular rated games.

I didn’t think anyone played as much as Jay. That’s very impressive. I’m sorry to hear of his passing.

Why don’t they have Most active lists published anymore? It was always interesting to see who the chess junkies were, and what rating they were.
