TD Certification Regulations

In an attempt to satisfy the requirements of 34a. a3 and a4, I’m having trouble with the substitutions listed in 34b. b1-b2.

First, 34a. a3 requires a $1K prize fund, but allows substitutions. Do the subs require a $1K prize (this isn’t stated in the sub rules)?

Second, in 34b. b1-b2, the final sentence isn’t clear to me. It states:

This single type of TD credit can be used as a substitute only three times, replacing at most three of the requirement a4 category B tournaments.

OK, so does this mean that for each cat B, 3 cat Cs would be needed as a substitute, further meaning that one could/would use/need 9 cat Cs to equal the required 3 credits of 34b. b2?

The confusion arises between the rule, and the spreadsheet that I have that states: “34 b Substitutions allowed for five Cat B tnmts.” I don’t know the limits here.

b1. Satisfactory performance as Chief TD at one Category C, C1, C2, B1 or B2 tournament (or any combination of two Quick/Blitz Chess Category C, C1, C2, B1 or B2 tournaments that can be combined to count as only one TD credit) which each awarded $1000 in cash prizes. This type of TD credit can be used as a substitute only twice, replacing at most two of the requirement a3 category B tournaments.
b2. One TD experience credit can be earned with the satisfactory performance as Chief TD at any combination of three Category C, C1, C2, B1 or B2 tournaments (or any combination of six Quick/Blitz Chess Category C, C1, C2, B1 or B2 tournaments that can be combined to count as only one TD credit). This single type of TD credit can be used as a substitute only three times, replacing at most three of the requirement a4 category B tournaments.

The b1 subs for a3 each need $1000 in cash prizes.
The b2 subs are three tournaments per sub (nine tournaments for three subs).

Re: TD Certification Rule 34.

QUESTION 3: Can a TD use multiple cat Cs, summed together, to equal one cat B (100+ players) in the substitutions clause?

QUESTION 4: Can we use the same Event ID more than once?

I don’t understand question 3, and in particular “summing together.” There are two possible substitutions, defined by 34b1 and 34b2. 34b1 addresses acceptable substitutions for 34a3 (paraphrase as “chief TD or chief assistant TD at 2 category B with big prize fund”) and 34a4 (paraphrase as “chief TD of 3 category B without regard to prize fund”).

Substituting for one of the “big prize fund” tournaments in 34a3, 34b1 requires only one category C (or C1, or C2, or B1, or B2) event, but it also requires being chief TD (not chief assistant TD, which is allowed in 34a3). (That leads me to wonder how exactly C1, C2, B1, or B2 apply to this substitution requirement.)

Substituting for one of the “not necessarily big prize fund” tournaments in 34a4 requires being chief TD (not chief assistant) at three C, C1, C2, B1, or B2 (or six quick events). It does not matter what size the events are, as long as they meet the definitions of category C, C1, C2, B1, or B2.

There are no other allowed substitutions. So, a rough summary of 34a and 34b combined:

  • Chief TD of four category B events, no restriction on prize funds
  • Chief TD of one category B event with a “big prize fund”
  • Two more “big prize fund” events:
[list][*]Two chief TD or chief assistant TD of a category B, or
  • One chief or chief assistant TD of category B, and chief TD (only) of one C/C1/C2/B1/B2, or
  • Two chief TD (only) of C/C1/C2/B1/B2
    [/:m]
    [
]Chief TD of the following (no prize fund requirement):
  • Three category B, or
  • Two category B and three category C/C1/C2/B1/B2, or
  • One category B and six category C/C1/C2/ B1/B2, or
  • Nine category C/C1/C2/B1/B2
    [/*:m][/list:u]

So, there is absolutely no avoiding being chief TD at a minimum of five category B events, one of which must have a large prize fund. (This comes from requirements 34a1 and 34a2, for which no substitution is allowed.) You also need two more “big prize fund” events, which can be satisfied with being chief TD of two category C events. Finally, the applicant needs three more “chief TD of category B event” credits; one can use three category C events for each of these credits.

As for question 4, I do not believe the same event ID may be used more than once.

The same event ID cannot be used twice in the a1/a2/a3/a4/b1/b2 set.
Since you are looking at ANTD, a single event ID can be used once in the a1-b2 requirements, used again in the c requirement, and used once more in the e requirement. It cannot, however, be used twice in the a1-b2 requirements or be used twice in the e requirement.
