Tournaments that are Title and or Norm rated

In the May 2026 Chess Life, an article entitled “The Rate Stuff” stated, “U.S. Chess currently has a system of norms and titles for the different classes all the way down to Class E.” The titles are easy to observe at the US Rating site. I do not see a specific heading titled norms, however. There is a list of specific “accomplishments” under each Title; perhaps these are the norms. I get (understand) the titles. I am a Title II, hitting a high of 1790. I have seen other A players who are still Title II.

My questions:

  1. What are the specific criteria for titles and norms for titles Il II, III, IV?

  2. As a TD and organizer, if I elect to run tournaments based on titles, does US Chess have a mechanism for downloading registrants from Registration Platforms listing Titles? If not, it would not be possible for a title tournament (Title I, II, III, IV).

  3. If a mechanism exists, are the Registration Platforms familiar with it? I do not see titles as a field in several platforms.

  4. As to those below E (Title IV), I suppose a separate section could be opened to them, non-titled?

On the Progress section of a member’s page on MUIR, the last two options are

Norms by Year
Norms By Event

Here’s the technical description of how norms-based titles work:

We do not have a field in any of the downloadable files for a player’s highest earned title.

It would probably be possible to add it to the all ratings TSV rating supplement file, but that would have to be added to the development schedule, and it would only reflect the highest title earned at the time the supplement file was created.

I do not recall US Chess having received a request to include that information in a downloadable file or anyone contemplating using norms-based titles at a tournament.

The ‘awards’ API under the Members APIs does show the highest norms-based title that a player has earned.
