USChess.org Site Down?

Is there an issue with the USChess.org website?
I cannot get the landing page to load.

new.uschess.org works but not www.uschess.org

I can’t to the VPN to get to the legacy ratings server, so I don’t know if it is up or not.

www.uschess.org is back online, but it looks like it was being hammered by web scrapers, so it might bog down again.

The VPN appears to be a separate issue.

I tried restarting that server but it got hammered again.

I’ve shut down access to tournament history, crosstables and game stats on the MSA server, but member data is still available. That seems to have stopped the hammering on that server, since that’s probably what they wanted to webscrape.

This may need to be a permanent change, we’ll have to discuss among staff.

Thanks Mike!
Those pesky web scrapers…

The uschess.org site is still down. It doesn’t redirect to new.uschess.org as you would expect nor can I get to any of the results pages, e.g. uschess.org/results/…, or to any MSA pages. I understand the tournament pages are offline, but so is the general member page.

It certainly looks like the entire https://uschess.org site is offline.

On further review. https is not working, while http is. That’s still a problem as everything is expecting https these days.

I processed several memberships lately and I’m unable to find their US Chess IDs in MUIR. Usually I go through the MSA server and fetch them from there, but I can’t seem to access it anymore as the MSA server is unreachable for me.

The server that hosts MSA is still getting hammered by what appears to be chess-related web-scraping activity.

You can bypass www.uschess.org by going to new.uschess.org to get to your member dashboard and do a member sync from there.

We are looking into what we can do medium-term to control this type of activity. (Long term the current www server will cease to exist and requests to www will probably be redirected to new.uschess.org.

I don’t know their IDs though. I can’t do a sync.

Didn’t you get their membership IDs when you processed the memberships? Can you give me last names and states?

When did you process them? We fixed some issues in the transfer process (membership system to MUIR) but it looks like we haven’t knocked them all out yet.

No, I didn’t get their IDs when I processed them.

Butala TX

KC TX

Satasia TX

Ravilla TX

Saleem TX

Moore TX

Jalagam TX

Jude Antony TX

Mohan TX

Kancharla TX

Iyer TX

Neuburger TX

I processed them 1-2 days ago.

I think the web-scraping activity and other traffic issues is affecting my ability to do queries on this, I did get one of them (Jalagam) transferred over but I don’t have a good way to do a query on recent IDs created in Texas at the moment and it took 3 minutes to find that one ID.

I wonder if the problems we’re having syncing to MUIR could be related to traffic issues as well.

The US Chess ID should be easy to pull from your dashboard

Click on submitted memberships then click on details after the dollar amount.

I was able (with some scrambling due to possibly related access issues) to generate a list of recent member IDs from TX, and that should be sufficient for the TD to sync up those players.

@chessman102 They’re all JTP memberships. It doesn’t show anything after I click on “Submitted Memberships”.

Thank you so much for that! It’ll help me a lot with my next tournament’s registrations.

Mike, I assume there is a good reason why we don’t get ID#s when we submit JTP memberships like we do when we submit paid memberships, but it would sure be handy if we did as long as our two databases struggle to communicate.

Since I’ve never submitted a membership batch under CIVI-CRM, I don’t honestly know what TDs see. I’ll try to chat with Korey about this some time this week. This might be something we have to talk to the CIVI-CRM developers about.

What is web scraping? And can you block web scraping from being performed on your server without shutting a server down in part or completely?
