Thank you for your help. I was able to submit tournament rating report.
https://ratings.uschess.org/ seems to be down
or just very slow
Iâm not aware of any issues, but I do not have direct access to the MUIR servers to check on their usage level. MUIR database queries seem to be running smoothly.
I do not see any problems on the legacy site, where recent problems have affected access to other parts of the US Chess domain space.
Have you noticed problems affecting other sites? Maybe the problem is somewhere in your network path.
I have gotten the âUnable to Connect to the APIâ message more than once and I am not scraping anything.
Ken, are in another country, this is usually an issue with foreign IP addresses being blocked.
No, I am in the United States.
Hmm, we saw some problems last week when www.uschess.org was getting hammered, but that does not appear to currently be a problem. Iâll check with the developers.
A different type of web problem than whatâs being mentioned upthread, but Iâm unable to get JTP numbers. I get the following error when I submit a membership batch:
Internal Server Error
Sorry for the inconvenience, you should not be seeing this!
Why did this happen?
-
Our servers are too busy.
-
The internet broke.
-
We had a little hiccup. Try reloading the page.
Is this being worked on?
Staff is aware of a problem in the membership system and theyâre currently trying to track down the cause. It may be a payment processor issue.
it seems like payment processing is working again but now they have to clean up the mess it created.
Just did 2 JTPs and they worked.
How do you use JTPs?
o Single School K-12?
o Primary K-3 section?
I always cringe when folks have K-3 K-2 K-1 K sections and state they must be USCF members to participate â join here. Locally here â they donât run many (any) primary sections and they always voucher kids (although that has gotten more expensive to absorb)
Some organizers only use JTP after the fact while asking for membership in the K-3 sections. Getting a membership for young kids gives parents an incentive to get more use out of the annual membership and thus enter more tournaments, with the organizer hoping that at least some of those additional tournaments are ones subsequently run by that organizer.
It is a balance between getting some additional entry fees from JTP-eligible players that are not paying for a membership versus getting repeat business from young players that became members. Areas where rated chess for kids is just starting to grow may get that growth to accelerate with JTP for K-3 (even with many kidsâ tournament careers being one-and-done) with older kids joining the federation because the want to continue. Areas where rated chess for kids is established may see fewer one-and-done players if JTP use is not publicized. And remember that every area is a little different and trying to use a nation-wide cookie-cutter plan will have a number of geographic areas where that is sub-optimal.
Yep, I understand the motivations of organizers to want the kids to be members. I cringe because they are saying they must be members as if it is beyond their control to let them play if they are not current members in a specifically Primary section. I prefer to be transparent, not that I wouldnât push the advantages of being a member. The one primary sectioned one left where I am has a high enough EF to absorb the cost of a voucher & other scholastic are all rating sectioned. So, a lot incentive to be a member since there are no other JTP Primary options.
Havenât used JTP so far.
Last time we were very close to make it possible as K-12 JTP at our elementary school club, but we included an entry from a third grader from a neighbor school (he was overflow student in our school when he was a second grader the previous year). Then it could not be a K-12 JTP as the third grader did not attend the school in the current year, and could not be be a Primary JTP as it included some 5th graders from our schoolâŚ
I think this is largely due to a lot of people being unaware of JTP. US Chess doesnât advertise the JTP that much because they donât want too many people using it due to the revenue loss.
Yes â I think every one I mentioned it to over the years said they did not know about it (or pretended not to/forgotten).. I do think the primary only has an issue in that the once very common K-3 grouping has been replaced by ratings based sections in a lot of areas (plenty of 2nd graders beating on 5-12 graders).. If the grouping was K-5 instead I think it would be more useful as it makes the entire elementary (K-5) school class have the option â two ore more could share resources and have a better chance for more accurate ratings from the get go.
