Game Stats and Norms

I am liking the new MUIR system so far (although I’m still nostalgic for MSA’s Web 1.0 charm), but I am sorely missing the Game Stats function. When can we expect it to be live? Additionally, when can we expect norms to be visible in the tournament crosstables?

I’m seeing game stats, norms, and milestones available now.

I’m curious about norms too. Norms are now available on the Progress tab but they’re not visible in the tournament results like they used to be. I think they used to say N and maybe the norm number?

Will there still be a slight delay in calculating norms after a tournament?

The data is a bit screwy.

I don’t expect 2026 or 2025 to match between the two, of course, but it’s very odd that I have more games listed for 2024, 2023, etc. in the old system than the new…

Yes, my understanding is that norms for newly rated events will continue to not be computed until after that event has been rerated once.

However, we are currently doing a two-month rerate overnight every day, so that shouldn’t take as long.

I don’t know if norms will be shown on the event crosstable, there isn’t really a good place for it there, and on MSA there was no place for them on a player’s page as there is now.

Actually, if the old system has the larger number of games, that’s easier to explain than if it had the smaller number, and there’s already a ticket filed on this.

Here’s what the old system (and the MUIR database) show for games from 2018-2024, so this looks like an issue with the program, not the database, but I can’t explain why MSA had different numbers for some years, perhaps some data transfer issues between the ratings database server and the MSA server?

year count

2018 209
2019 338
2020 274
2021 211
2022 245
2023 181
2024 231

The game counts are apparently counting dual rated games twice, and it appears that was true on MSA as well.

The game counts are just completely wrong. I have a very short chess history so it’s easy to manually count the number of games played and it is showing the wrong totals for 2024 and 2025.

The game count error may also be affecting Milestones. My kid should definitely have 100 wins but it shows him with only 50 as of 9/2024. He played around 30 tournaments in 2025 if we exclude blitz and rapid only tournaments, so that’s at least 150 games. For 50 more wins after 9/2024, he only needs to win 1 out of 3 games on average. I haven’t manually counted his wins but unlikely that he is winning less than 1 in 3 when his rating has gone up about 400 points since 9/2024.

If you send me his ID, I can query the MUIR database and see what it says. I’ve already done this for some other players and the displayed game counts are definitely off.

I don’t see norms for tournaments after the cutover ( from late October.) Looks like Norms data was imported from MSA but not calculated for tournaments since cutover.

Confirmed, the most recent event in the norms table is from late October.

Hi, I’m not seeing the title and norms in MUIR site, I earned from tournaments played after late October 2025, and my previous milestone is also not reflecting correctly. Could you please guide me on how this can be corrected?

We’re still working on migrating all the norms and titles from the legacy system and hope to have new norms and newly awarded titles available on MUIR later this month.

Game stats should be in the process of catching up, it takes a while to update the database it uses, so the counts are still low.

I see that game stats updated. Game totals definitely look more accurate. I think my kid is still missing games but it’s a lot better. [Edit: his game totals look fully accurate, after realizing I made an estimating mistake). Mine looks accurate. Opponents also updated.

is first ranked by number of games and then ranked by what criteria? thanks

Don’t know, finding out.

The MSA Game Stats https://www.uschess.org/datapage/gamestats.php?memid= had statics detailed in opponents’ rating group (every 100 points a group), and you could choose between pre-event and post-event ratings.

I just checked, the old Game Stats on MSA are shut down. Unfortunately gone…

We shut a lot of things when we were working on the network bandwidth issue, they’ll probably be back again at least until we shut MSA down for good, once we’re sure the measures we put in place today are really working.

Any further enhancements to game stats will fall under ‘new work’ and that has to go through spec, design, approval and programming/testing steps.

When the new norms start appearing, will they also perhap streamline the norm list display? Right now, if someone gets a Master norm, the list also shows that they got C, 1, 2, 3, and 4 norms from the same event, so the list is very cluttered. Also, if someone got a norm they didn’t need because they already had the title, it’s still showing up. As an example, this player got their USCF CM title in 2023, so the old site stopped displaying new CM norms after that. The new site is showing a CM norm earned in Oct/25. US Chess

That’s a good point, the old system always showed the norms on the crosstable, but it was kind of stuffed in as there’s no really good place for them, but it suppressed them on the norm lists once a title was earned. It should only show the highest earned norm for an event, because that counts towards lower titles.
