MUIR enhancement

MUIR is now capable of displaying a RR event in classic RR format. For an example, see: (US Chess)

I believe the next step in this will to allow TDs to get a RR (and double RR) form to fill out when entering an event online. (I’m not sure if a RR event that is uploaded from the 3 DBF files will show as an RR event in editing or not until the event is rated, I’ll ask about that.)

This is a side-benefit of our work on adding correspondence chess to MUIR, since essentially all correspondence events are RR events.

I hate the classic RR format display. You don’t know who played who in each round.

If you drill down to the detail, it shows that, at least for event entered in swiss-style, not sure that will be the case for events entered as RR or DRR events.

Mike, How does TD Michael Buss record his tournaments when he has Double RR tournaments in Correspondence Chess as in Walter Muir E Quads?

Correspondence chess is currently a standalone app on the legacy server. It’s the last major task still running on that system. He uses manual records for some of what he’s doing, I believe, but there he can create the RR events and mark games off as completed.

The plan is for it to be integrated into MUIR as much as possible.

The biggest differences are that games are rated one at a time, because a large RR event (Golden Knights) can last 2 years, some games over with quickly, others that go on for a long time.

The ratings formula is also quite different (sort of a throwback to what the US Chess ratings formula was in the early 70’s.)

He will have a custom form to create an event as a RR, 2RR or two-player match, and then mark individual games as completed as the reports are received. MUIR will allow us to show crosstables for in-progress and completed events, something the current system cannot do. My guess is that form won’t show ratings, but if you click on an individual game it will show the pre and post game ratings for both players, along with the date it was rated. There will probably be a separate page similar to the ones currently in use that shows completed games in the order in which they were rated.

Another thing that the rewrite of Correspondence chess will allow is for other organizers to run correspondence chess and have those games be part of the US Chess correspondence ratings system. (The mechanics of that are still under discussion, anyone running an online CC event will probably have to use an existing server, at least until they can demonstrate that the server they are using is acceptable.)

Will the rewrite of the correspondence chess ratings interface still allow for the hybrid model currently in use of some of the older events continuing to occur postally and the remainder occurring via server? In particular it is my hope that the Golden Knights tournament at least will always be maintained postally, despite the inefficiencies and how much I also enjoy server-based chess.

The correspondence software doesn’t care how the tournament is held.
