A player played in a tournament on July 7th and their rating rose to a rating that will likely land them in the top 100 for their age. The tournament also caused them to no longer have a provisional rating.
I read something that parents have to give permission for their child’s name to appear on a top 100 list. I was wondering how this worked.
Top 100 lists are based upon published ratings, an event rated in early July will make the August supplement, which will be generated later this week.
That published rating does not become official until August 1st, and it will be the basis for the August Top 100 lists when they are released in mid-August.
In early August, the office will send emails to people who may appear on the next set of Top 100 lists if they do not have a verified birthdate and gender in US Chess records. (Obviously, they also need a valid email address, for the latest set of Top 100 candidate letters we had somewhere around 20 players who did not have an email address and another 50-60 for whom the email bounced.) Responding to that email also is consent to be listed on the Top 100 lists, since age-based lists do show the player’s current age in years. (Some people decide to opt out of being on Top 100 lists because they don’t want that information released.)
Thanks for the information. I will let her parents know to look out for an email in early August since the August list would be the first list she would have a chance at making.
Just to clarify, the top 100 list for a given month is based on the published ratings from the first day of the month?
That’s correct, the August Top 100 lists will be released in mid-August based on the ratings in the August supplement.
It has been broken since March 2026. Will this be fixed?
I’ve reported it to the developers, no ETA on fixing it yet.
