Prepping for MUIR changeover

As part of the preparation for next week’s data migration to MUIR, we will be doing another full rerate starting on Sunday. TD/A will shut down at 9PM CT on Wednesday, October 29th, so that we can finish the data migration.

We think the data migration will take at most 3 days, which would mean opening up MUIR on Saturday, but we’re hoping that by starting the process of transferring events from before 2020 ahead of the TD/A cutoff we can have it open sooner.

TDs who have tournaments they’re getting ready to submit need to complete working on them by 9PM CT on Wednesday, otherwise they will need to completely redo them once MUIR opens, as we will not be migrating in-progress events, only ones that have been submitted for rating.

TD/A will be shut down, but MSA and the thin client tools will continue to be functional and receive membership updates, though once we start rating new events on MUIR the MSA pages will no longer be current. The December rating supplement schedule will probably continue to have a cutoff on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, but that might change in the future. December rating supplement files will (probably) only be available through MUIR.

There will be a demo of MUIR (mainly the TD functions) at 7PM CT on Monday, the signup for the the ZOOM session is already available on new.uschess.org. This session will be recorded and made available for viewing.

We will probably be keeping the beta system as a sandbox for TDs and programmers to experiment with and for testing future enhancements to MUIR before committing them to the live MUIR system, we’ll post more information on that as we finalize those plans.

Some of the planned features for MUIR will not be available at rollout.

For example, TDs submitting round robin events will need to put them in using Crenshaw-Berger round-by-round pairings until we get a format for entering true RR formatted events completed.

Programmers interested in an API for access to member/tournament data and, eventually, for uploading events directly into MUIR should watch for further information on this, it will be necessary to sign up for an API key to gain access to the API tools. This is so we can monitor API usage and apply a higher rate limit to that kind of automated data transfer.

US Chess is working on staffing plans for when MUIR opens so that we have staff available over the weekend of November 1-2 by phone, email or in the Forums to help TDs understand how MUIR works and to assist with any problems.

We have a new email address specifically for reporting tournament and ratings issues during and after the MUIR changeover: ratings-support@uschess.org

Atlantic Chess Association has a tournament ‘Thanksgiving Open’ that starts on Friday Oct 31 and ends on Nov 2.

Once the TD/A is shutdown on Wednesday Oct 29, will we have access to player USCF ID and ratings information (in either old or new system) during the tournament?

The MSA system will remain up during a transition period and will continue to have updated membership information, but it won’t have any additional tournament submitted after October 29th or rerates of any previous events that are generated on MUIR.

If your event is using published ratings, the October Ratings List would be the list to use, and it has been available since mid-September on your member dashboard. The November ratings list is also available now and will be the list that tournaments starting on Saturday, November 1st, would generally use. The first set of ratings lists generated on MUIR will be the December 2025 list, in mid-November.

MUIR will be turned on after the data migration is complete and tested, that is likely to be 2 or 3 days later. So for the purposes of your tournament starting on Friday, MSA will still be current because no new tournaments will be rated after Wednesday until MUIR is opened up, probably on Friday or Saturday.

In the future, TDs who use current ratings will have to get them from MUIR, but that probably won’t affect tournaments held the weekend of November 1-2, depending on when MUIR is opened up.

Thank you for this explanation. It is very helpful.

Since MSA system will remain up, there should be no issues with last minute registrations then.

Correct.

Currently to look up a player’s published rating, you go to a member search page, enter the player’s name or ID, click on the player’s name to bring up the player’s MSA page which shows the player’s published rating, and if you want current ratings click on the ‘TNMT HIST” tab to bring up the player’s most recent events.

On MUIR you will go to the MUIR member search page, enter the player’s name or ID, click on the player’s name to bring up the player’s MUIR page which shows the player’s published rating, and if you want current ratings click on ‘MORE’ in the right hand column to bring up the player’s most recent events.

So it should be the same number of steps under MUIR as it is under MSA.

Thanks for the tip since our club uses current ratings. About my “More” listing, why are all dates on the left 10/23/2025, and why is the rating column empty for the most recent events (all of which were a week old or more)?

Leago is migrating the tournament and ratings database in two steps. First they migrate the tournament information then they migrate the associated ratings information. It looks like the tournaments were migrated but not the ratings yet for those events.

They’re starting on the production migration today (pre-2003, unaffected by any rerates) and I don’t know when beta is likely to get updated again.
